For Schools

The Map

On a first come first served basis a special limited edition laminated map showing the British Isles and the 4 furthest compass points of East, North, West and South plus the start point of H for Home at Henton are available to primary to schools, or charities or clubs and associations where young children are involved. The map shows all the counties, principle towns, A roads and motorways. To obtain your map please fill in this contact form On receipt of your details we hope to dispatch a map to you the same day (Monday to Friday) but depending on your location it may take 7 days to arrive. Please be aware the map is 120cm by 83cm and is rolled into a Cardboard Tube that measures 6cm by 100cm and thus will not go through a normal post box. When you get your map shake the tube and take out A4 sheet of helpful information about “extracting” your map from the tube and how to use it and other contents. For a picture of the map and appreciate its size go to The Yellow Ribbon The length of yellow ribbon across it is about 3 feet long.

The Contact Form

When filling in your contact form bear in mind it needs to be a person and address where delivery will be easy, that is the postman will be able to knock and hand you your map, as it will not go through a normal post box. Please therefore use an address of the school office, or say a parent or school governor if this ensures someone is available to take delivery. You will note that we have asked for the name of your school (or club/organisation) to cater for situations where the delivery address is not the school. We also hope you will enter into the spirit of bringing schools across the country together and show you are happy to support this venture and the charities involved by advising us of the number of children you expect to be using the map and this website. You will see you have the option to attach a picture of your school (or a school event) that we will post on a Schools Gallery. Please also go to The Yellow Ribbon to learn more about “tying together” the whole of the British mainland.

Using Your Map

I hope you will use your map and this website to discover a host of different facts about where you live and how your town or village came into being and how it is connected or associated with other villages, and towns nearby. The first thing to do is to mark where your school or village is on the map. You can do this by finding the county you live in then the nearest main town which should be marked. Obviously it has not been possible to mark every place name on a map of this size even though it is one of the largest available.  If you look around where you live you may find that a lot of nearby places have names with similar beginnings or endings. This is because most places have their origins in settlements that may have been established over 1000 years ago when England and Scotland where settled by different tribes or clans or people from overseas such as the Vikings or Saxons or Normans. If you look at Lincolnshire and Yorkshire you will see a lot of towns with the ending ‘by’ such as Spilsby, Wragby, Grimsby, Selby and Wetherby. The ‘by’ meant settlement of Danish or Viking origin, The walker is Peter Gatenby and Gatenby is a small village to the east of the A1 opposite Ripon in Yorkshire.  In Scotland you get a lot of towns beginning with ‘Inver’ This was of Celtic origin meaning where rivers met or perhaps the river mouth. You can see on the map such towns as Invergarry, Inverness or Invergordon.

Having marked yourself on the map you are invited to join in with the Daily Projects and discussion points that will be posted here each day on this website. I suggest you use www.streemap.co.uk  to give you the ordinance survey view of the area being walked on a given day. Put in the search box the name of the town I start at or finish at, to get you to the area I will be walking. You will need to go to Today's Journey to see each day’s route destination.

You can also look up previous or future days activities by selecting a day/date and clicking on it. I also hope you will use some of the projects to raise money for one or more of the charities. For details of the charities I am supporting go to The 5 Charities or each charities own separate page. On the 1st leg walking East the charity being supported is Soundabout then the 2nd leg, all the way North it is Happy Days, then as I am in Scotland for the 3rd leg to the most Westerly point Sense Scotland and finally for the 4th leg on the long journey South The Tree of Hope. The 5th leg is of a different nature since I will have reached (or hope to have) all the 4 compass points, thus the “Homecoming” 5th leg is supporting the home church of Christ Church Henton PCC.
